Another tasty treat that we have been
wanting to try is ice wine. It’s only made in a couple of countries in the
world – Canada, Germany, France and not many more. It’s made by picking the
grapes when they are frozen from a frost and at a high level of sweetness. If
most wines in Canada are on a sweetness scale of 0-2 with 2 being sweet, ice
wine is at 23, so you can guess just how sweet it is!
We’d seen bottles of ice wine in the liquor
stores, but hadn’t yet bought one. Inniskillin is endorsed by Lynn Crawford who
is a famous Canadian chef. She does a show on the Food Network that Will is a
little bit obsessed with, called Pitchin’
In where she travels around Canada finding the freshest, tastiest and most
unusual foods. Anyway, that was the winery we decided to try out for our
tasting of the day (with Will driving we couldn’t really indulge too much).
I figured we could afford to buy a bottle
of the cheaper ice wine any time, but the more expensive stuff (around $80 a
bottle) was a little beyond our unemployed budget, so we decided to try the red
ice wine at $10 a glass. It was super sweet, but super delicious. The man at
the tasting table served it with a bitter chocolate and said to drink some
wine, eat some chocolate, then drink the wine again to enhance the flavour of
the wine. To my not-so-refined palate, the wine tasted just great without the
chocolate, but I never say no to free chocolate!! And besides, I do like a
sweet wine!
We ended up buying a bottle of the regular,
white ice wine (if you can call it regular), and the tasting fee was taken off J.
The red ice wine was so good! We haven’t
had the bottle we bought yet, but I’m definitely excited to drink it!
Trying the expensive stuff we can't afford! ($80 for 250ml bottle) |
Will very happy with our purchase. |
